MOPS (3-(N-morpholino)propanesulfonic acid) is a zwitterionic buffer in the Good’s family of biological buffers. With a pKa of 7.2 at 25°C and a buffering range of 6.5–7.9, MOPS is especially suited for maintaining stable, near-neutral pH in biological and biochemical applications.
Unlike some buffers, MOPS shows minimal interaction with metal ions and low absorption in the UV range, making it highly compatible with spectrophotometric assays and nucleic acid studies. It is widely used in cell culture, protein purification, and RNA electrophoresis (e.g., MOPS buffer system for agarose gel electrophoresis), as well as in and enzyme activity assays where precise pH control is essential.
Advancion produces two grades of MOPS to support diverse application needs:
- Buffer Grade (≥99.0% purity): A high-quality option for standard laboratory and research use.
- Biologics Plus Grade (≥99.5% purity): Designed for advanced bioprocessing, this grade includes an expanded panel of microbial and metals testing to ensure superior quality and consistency for sensitive biologics applications.
- RNA and nucleic acid electrophoresis
- Cell and tissue culture
- Protein purification and extraction
- Enzyme assays and biochemical reactions
- Research and development (R&D) buffer
- Appearance White Crystalline Powder
- Purity (dependent on grade of product) 99.0% or 99.5%
- Molecular Weight 209.27
- Melting Point 273 – 276 °C
